What is the Qur'an?
"It is the final revelation of the will of Almighty God's to all of mankind, which was conveyed through the Angel Gabriel, in Arabic, to the Prophet Muhammad in its sounds, words and meanings. The Qur’an, sometimes spelled Koran, was relayed to the Prophet's companions, which they memorized verbatim, and which has been publicly and continually recited by them and their successors until the present day. In short, the Qur'an is the book of guidance from God par excellence. The Qur'an is still memorized and taught by millions of people. The language of the Qur'an, Arabic, is still a living language to millions of people, so unlike the scriptures of other religions, the Qur'an is still read in its original language by countless millions of people. The Qu'ran is a living miracle in the Arabic language; and is know to be inimitable in its style, form and spiritual impact. God's final revelation to mankind, the Qur'an, was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over a period of 23 years. The Qur'an, in contrast to many other religious books, was always thought to be the Word of God by those who believed in it, i.e. it wasn't something decreed by a religious council many years after being written. Also, the Qu'ran was recited publicly in front of both the Muslim and non-Muslim communities during the life of the Prophet Muhammad. The entire Qur'an was also completely written down in lifetime of the Prophet, and numerous companions of the Prophet memorized the entire Qur'an word-for-word as it was revealed. So unlike other scriptures, the Qur'an was always in the hands of the common believers, it was always thought to be God's word and, due to wide spread memorization, it was perfectly preserved. In regards to the teachings of the Qur'an - it is a universal scripture, and it is addressed to all of mankind, and not to a particular tribe or "chosen people". The message that it brings is nothing new, but the same message of all of the prophets - submit to Almighty God and worship Him alone. As such, God's revelation in the Qur'an focuses on teaching human beings the importance of believing in the Unity of God and framing their lives around the guidance which He has sent. Additionally, the Qur'an contains the stories of the previous prophets, such as Abraham, Noah, Moses and Jesus; as well as many commands and prohibitions from God. In modern times in which so many people are caught up in doubt, spiritual despair and "political correctness", the Qur'anic teachings offer solutions to the emptiness of our lives and the turmoil that is gripping the world today."

Truth,
Are you ever planning on letting us know why you think that Islam is the most misunderstood religion? Do you think that it is only misunderstood by non Muslims?

lynn in us
I have mentioned the reason in answering one of the commenter, who said:
"Unfortunately as Islam is currently understood by many in the world the religion is ran by the Mullahs and Immans who make decrees and Fatwas that are followed to the letter by many Muslims. Since Islam has no official hierarchy many of these leaders are self appointed and can rise to a position of power through some very questionable means"
My answer was, this one of the causes made me chose this title.
Really I think it is misunderstood by most non Muslims as well as by some Muslims.
I will try to explain few things about Islam in my response tp moron99 comment. Just read them there.

First of all I have to apologize about some expecting error in translation, because it is very difficult for me to translate some Islamic terms without affecting the meaning.
"But I think the greatest disconnect is the difference between what Allah's word through the prophet mean to me and how they are handled by the Imams that are in power."
The words of Quran, are the exact words that prophet Muhammad(PBUH) received from the God (allah), through the angel Jebriel It was memorized by Muhammad(PBUH) and then dictated to his companions. The contents of the Quran was cross-checked during the life of the Prophet. The Qur’an, was relayed to the Prophet's companions, which they memorized verbatim, and which has been publicly and continually recited by them and their successors until the present day. The entire Qur'an was also completely written down in lifetime of the Prophet, and numerous companions of the Prophet memorized the entire Qur'an word-for-word as it was revealed. The 114 chapters of the Quran have remained unchanged through the centuries.
The speechs of Mohammad(PBUH), are his own words to explain, or to direct his follower, about how to apply the rules of Islam on their daily life. The Prophet Muhammad always emphasized that he was only a human being tasked with the preaching of God’s message. He taught Muslims to refer to him as "the Messenger of God and His Slave.
The Islam is a system of life not just a religion.
The Quran deals with several subjects, as system of worship, civil rights, laws of marriage and divorce, laws of inheritance, code of behavior, what not to drink, what to wear, and what not to wear, how to worship God, how to govern, the laws of war and peace, when to go to war, when to make peace, the law of economics, and the laws of buying and selling. Islam is a complete code of life.
In the quran there are two type of phrases.
1- The words or phrases that contain straightforward and clear rules, which carry no other explanation.
Those must be followed to the letter by all Muslims, no matter who he or she is, a rich or poor, old or young, king or ordinary citizen, no discrimination between sex, gender nationality, or skin colors, any where and any time. Those are called (Ayat Muhkamat).
2- Some phrases are general rules for a particular events or for particular place or time. Those could be explained diffferently in different situation, hence the rule of the religious scientist (not a mullah). the religious scientist must be very competent in Arabic languge, know every thing about the rules of Islam, very competent in the meaning of the Quran words, and know every things about the life of prophet Muhammad(PBUH), his speechs, his directions and translation of the Quran words.
3- The stories of other prophets, and other meaningful stories.
The leaders in power, not necessarily being the Imam, are responsible to direct the people, watch them, advice them, and if necessary apply the rules of law over them. The leaders must win the trust of the people and if not , the people have the right to change them. The judge (which usually an independent religious man) have the right to subject the leader to the court if he misuse his power. (those points are how the real islam is, not how the present leaders who use the name of Islam for their personal benefit.)

I believe that would be the 10 Commandments moron99. Can't get any simpler than that and nothing more is needed.

I knew what you were talking about moron99. Islam believes in all the previous prophets so I figured they must also believe in the 10 commandments. As Rosebuds said we need to start believing in Allah and not religion. Follow the 10 commandments and the Golden Rule -Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Simple, easy to remember and logical. No scholars or long lessons necessary.
